The Arctic Monkeys

Mar 3 & 4

The Arctic Monkeys, a four-piece indie-rock band from Sheffield, North England, have had a fantastic last twelve months. Hav-ing just scooped three UK NME Awards for Best British Band, Best New Band and Best Track they were also picked to join the NME tour (screened on MTV). Already with a strong fan base the band signed to Domino Records in June 2005. Their debut single, I bet you look good on the dance floor, amazingly shot straight in to the UK charts at number one. If that wasn't enough then their debut album Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not did exactly the same (in Australia) and has received high admiration from critics and fans alike.

What's even more astounding is that the idea of putting the band together only came to vocalist/guitarist Alex Turner and guitarist Jamie Cook when they were given guitars as Christmas presents just three years ago. From there they began practicing ferociously and in compe-tition with each other. The long hours spent locked away with six strings and a piece of wood certainly paid off and as Turner himself says 'If I say phenomenon it sounds like I'm up my own arse, but we'd be daft to act like we didn't realize how incredible the last year has been'.

On the surface their songs about prostitutes, drunken fights, dodgy police and over-zealous doormen might sound like a bunch of kids spou- ting immaturities but listen carefully and you'll find that these lyrics have a very deep message but are simply delivered in a direct no nonsense manner.
For one of the best new and young bands around at the moment see The Arctic monkeys at Zepp on the 2nd April.

Al Di Meola

Apr 10 & 11

Born in 1954 in to a New Jersey Italian family, Al Di Meola has been at the forefront of contemporary jazz-fusion for three deca-des. Di Meola is a guitarist's guitarist known for his technical mastery and amazingly fast and complex solos. A graduate of Boston's esteemed Berklee College of Music his marathon pra-ctice sessions are legendary so it was no surprise when at just 19 years of age he was invited to join Chick Corea's band. This employment lasted until 1976 when he set out alone.

His early albums were amongst the highest selling instrumental artist at the time and he has continued to captivate audiences with his unique musical skills. Although Di Meola brings many influences from around the world in to his music his main orientation is Latin based jazz-fusion. He has over twenty solo albums to his name, three gold, over six million in sales plus nume-rous awards and is a four-time winner of Guitar Player Magazine's Best jazz Guitarist Award.

Over the course of the years Di Meola has played with many great musicians including John McLaughlin, Luciano Pavarotti, Paul Simon, Jimmy Page, Stanley Clarke and Les Paul. His current line-up of Mario Parnisano (Piano), Victor Miranda (Bass) Gumbi Oritz (Percussion) and Ernie Adams (Drums) will be backing Al Di Meola at Osaka Blue Note on April10th and 11th.

Janet Klein & Her Parlour Boys

Apr 23

Janet Klein is a rare breed. In fact there is no one like Janet Klein and that's the truth. With an innocent smile and quaint bobbed hairstyle she describes her musical repertoire as 'obscure, lovely and naughty songs from the 1910s, 20s and 30s'. Raised in California she had a fascination with pre-World War
Two American culture and music instilled as a young girl by her grandfather (who had worked as a stage magician in 1930s New York).

Klein's backing band are a loose-knit group of up to a dozen musicians usually topping out at six or seven on any given performance. Instrumentally the band comprises of banjo, piano, mandolin, ukulele, cornet, accordion, violin, Hawaiian steel guitar and washboard; Klein herself is an accomplished ukulele player.

Going to a Janet Klein show you could be forgiven for thinking that you're in for a night of comedy but think again, these are top musicians (some have been playing professionally since the 1960s) lead by a great vocalist. You're in for a night of musical archeology introduced by a very talented, entertaining lady.

Jesse Harris

Apr 18 & 20

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jesse Harris is difficult to categorise as far as musical genres go. This able musician from New York is best known for his guitar and songwriting contributions to Norah Jones albums Come Away With Me (which won a Grammy) and Feels Like Home. In his own so-far short career Harris has recorded six albums in the space of just five years. Rolling Stone Magazine has described his latest offering, titled Mineral, as 'Harris's best work … cultivating a day-dreamy atmosphere that lingers from one song to the next'.

Although there is a heavy jazz/folk influence to his music Harris also has a few catchy pop tunes and it seems to be the subtle way he manages this mix of styles that keeps his audience interested and wanting more.

Currently signed to Verve records Harris has just completed a string of small US dates (and a few free shows). If you're looking for a relaxed evening of easy on the ear mellow tunes then catch Jesse Harris at Club Quattro, Osaka on the 18th or Taku Taku, Kyoto on the 20th.
