Black and White Posters

Thru Jul 28

DDD Gallery, Osaka

The signature of this Black and White Posters exhibition
is that, true to its title, only black and white posters are included.

The exhibition consists of 60 works by renowned overseas designers selected from among the massive collection of the Museum für Gestaltung Zurich (Switzerland). We now take the presence of color for granted, but this means it is losing its impact as a visual communication code. The posters shown here persuasively demonstrate that by opting for “black and white” as a system, design can win back its power, and color its urgency. It might be said that the creative will to exploit the colour of the paper and the black of the ink alone is the driving force behind the poster’s succinct statement.

This exhibition will display 60 posters that uses only black and white selected from among the historical poster collection of the Museum für Gestaltung Zurich. The Museum für Gestaltung’s poster collection is one of the most comprehensive and significant archives of its kind in the world.

Chen Chin (1907-1998), was an outstanding
and representative painter in Taiwan’s modern art history.
Ms Chen Chin previously held an 80th anniversary retrospective at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

This new exhibition, however, is her most large-scale to date, as well as the first major solo exhibition of a Taiwanese artist to be sent to Japan on an exhibition tour. She worked under renowned painters such as Kiyotaka Kaburagi and Shinsui Ito in Japan and become the first Taiwanese woman to be included in the Teiten, a prestigious exhibition run by the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. She used nihonga techniques to depict women, which was her main subject in her younger ears. 2006 marks the 100th anniversary of her birth so as a tribute, one hundred of Chen Chin’s key works will be on display.
