Commercial enterprise

A strutting man in a cape livens up a library by shooting Mentos mints out of his sleeves; a samurai-sword wielding panda slashes all who stand in his way in a Karaoke UGA advert. If you are of the opinion that commercials are creativity-free and a complete waste of time, The Night of the Adeaters 2006 may be just the thing to change your mind.

This one night festival – running from 10pm Oct 13 to 5am Oct 14 – features 500 television commercials from countries all over the world. Special for this year is a selection of soccer-themed commercials; the 2005 and 2006 Cannes CM Grand Prix winners; gay and lesbian-themed commercials; an homage to Amnesty International; and Korean commercials featuring perennial obachan heart-throb Bae Yon-Joon.

Adeaters – established as an event in 47 countries now – is venerated for the boisterous, party-like atmosphere its events. “With advertising (and added English & Japanese subtitles when needed) the message is short and compact enough to be understood by all, crossing boundaries of language and culture,” says the group.

This year’s event will take place in the Osaka International House. Advance tickets are ¥3,500 and are available via Ticket Pia. (Tickets at the door are ¥4,000.)
