SYNAPTIC feat. PASCAL F.E.O.S

Jul 15

CLUB ROCKETS, Osaka

Pascal F.E.O.S has devoted more than seventeen years of his life to electronic music. He first came in contact with club music, like many other DJs in early 80s, via disco and then got into more trancy sounds playing under the aliases Resistance D (with Maik Maurice Diehl) and Sonic Infusion. After moving away from trance, he transformed his sound as a DJ and a producer towards more dancefloor oriented techno and is now considered to be the techno icon by many. Apart from the DJ/production business, he runs the influential Elektrolux, HeyBabe, Planet Vision and PV record labels. With his true passion and dedication to dance music, he has earned the respect of industry giants the likes of Laurent Garnier, Sven Vath, John Aquqviva, and Thomas Schumacher. Joining the party is Xavier Morel from France along with a bunch of local talents. This is going to be a big one. Email [email protected] to purchase advance tickets online.

Time: 11pm • Door: ¥3,500/1D, WF: ¥3,000/1D • Online Ticket: ¥2,500/1D
Guest DJs: Pascal F.E.O.S, Xavier Morel
DJs: Tez, Shuhei Yamawaki, Masahiro Goda, Luke Le Mans, Ito, Ono, Kai, Hero, Yuki

Jul 20

TRIANGLE, Osaka

On July 20th, Triangle sees the hotly tipped Tunisian born German techno/house maestro, Loco Dice for the first time. Starting his music career as a rapper and a hip hop DJ, Dice supported many big name performers including Usher, Ice Cube, Jamiroquai, Snoop Dog and R. Kelly. After the scene became dominated by hip hop, he switched to more electronic-based music and started creating a buzz with his releases and remixes on the famous Cocoon, Ovum, Plkerflat and M_nus labels. His dance floor-friendly DJ skills earned him residencies at 2004's DC-10, the most cutting-edge clubs in Ibiza and Germany's hottest venue, Tribehouse in Dusseldorf. His extensive production resume includes the melodic minimal gem 'Seeing Through Shadows' which invaded clubland in 2006. His latest double album Time Warp Compilation is in stores now.

Time: 10pm • Door: ¥3,000
GUEST DJs: Loco Dice, Kihira Naoki
DJs: Hajime Matsumura, Dora, Atsuji, Kunimitsu

Treading the thin line, beautifully

Music, when made just right, has the ability to do just about anything. The art of sound may just be as close as we will ever get to solve the energy crisis or perpetual motion. Now, hyperbole aside, there is a very fine line, these days, between what is groundbreaking and what is un-listenable. Few artists manage to tread this line as precisely and adroitly as Jason Swinscoe's The Cinematic Orchestra and Simon Green's Bonobo, label-mates on the inimitable Ninja Tunes. With both artists recently releasing their latest albums to critical acclaim, Kansai welcomed them as part of a Ninja Tunes showcase in Osaka.

Balancing the various aspects of being multi-talented musicians is a cerebral process for both artists. Simon explains, "The root of it all is the recorded music, while the live show is relatively new. I wanted to take the albums live, but did not want to do the 'nodding-into-the-laptop' kind of thing because that is not how the music is made." Jason adds, "The new record is out, so the priority for me is touring with the live show. This takes up the majority of my time and dictates what else I have time to do. I have tried to write music on the road but it is not conducive."

Jason has recently finished touring Europe with a thirteen-piece band. You could imagine that this would be a nightmare to orche- strate. "Well, it can be a little tough at times, but they are a good bunch of people."

Simon, hailing from Brighton, England, found assembling the band that would take Bonobo live to be relatively easy. "Brighton has a small community of people and everyone plays in a band, so I borrowed musicians from different bands.”

The Cinematic Orchestra's new album, entitled Ma Fleur, is best described in Jason’s own words, “There is a word that the critics are using to describe the album. That word is ‘beautiful’. In making the album I wanted to create something a bit more feminine. It is not about boy’s music, clubs and breakbeats. It is something more sensual and romantic. More about love and those kinds of things. So when people say that it is beautiful, it shows that it is working, that it is getting through to people.” The album is a gorgeous soundtrack to a film that may, or may not ever, be made.

For Days to Come, Bonobo’s new work, Simon purposefully chose to do things differently. “The process of sequencing and sampling is something that I have been doing for a long time, and for me it was becoming formulaic. I needed to find a way to work that was exciting again. So I used a more compositional approach. I found it liberating, not being at the mercy of what I could find on other people’s records.”

Treading the thin line between being cutting edge and making music that most people would admit is good is a musical artist’s dream. Tackled so effortlessly it would seem, but Jason remains philosophical about it. “I definitely think about it. I make music for other people, not for myself, although, while I am making music, it feels like a form of meditation or therapy. It is something that is not about self-indulgence, I try to strip all of that away, and then it becomes an entity all of its own. I just carve it out. The ideas are there, I give form to the ideas, and as a band we go into the studio and record these ideas. But it is not about us, as people, saying, ‘Look what we can do’. It is about the music and how music communicates to people.”

On the new record, everything is well considered and he has taken a more minimal approach, stripping away the irrelevance. Jason explains, “That is why I worked with singer-songwriters. I wanted to write songs much more than instrumentals.”

The Cinematic Orchestra’s Ma Fleur and Bonobo’s Days to Come are available now in any good music store.
