Canny resemblance

There's an interesting phrase that describes the creeped-out emotion some viewers feel when watching a film populated by "photo- realistic" CGI actors. The "Uncanny Valley" (a term created by robotist Mori Masahiro) describes the gap between a non-human entity that garners goodwill (the idea being that people will more easily enjoy the "human" traits therein) and a humanlike entity that freaks people out (the idea being that people always notice when things that are supposed to look human actually don't).

Films like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Polar Express are regarded as spectacular failures that fell deep into the Valley; recent works like Beowulf have had much greater success – partly, perhaps, because of filmmakers who now make concerned efforts to "back off" the realism and make the CGI actors a little more otherworldlylooking (a handy way to avoid UV complaints).

The technology is progressing, and with it, filmmakers' hopes that CGI actors (who work very cheap) will someday be indistinguishable from the real thing. Director James Cameron will give CGI actors a shot with his sci-fi epic Avatar in 2009; director Peter Jackson (with Steven Spielberg pro- ducing) will try next year, as well, with a CGI-assisted version of TinTin.
