Peace in our time

That hideously pointless, completely avoidable war is finally over! Well, this one is, anyway; after months of breathless, which- platform-will-win commentary detailing the struggle between competing nextgeneration DVD formats HD-DVD (from Toshiba Corp.) and Blu-ray (from Sony), the dust finally settled late last month.

And the loser is … the consumer. Though news reports may spend most of their time lamenting Toshiba's several hundredmillion dollar loss – research, production and advertising money down the drain after the format's abject rejection in February – the real unfortunates are those pitiable consumers who simply picked the wrong format to back early on.

A killing blow was struck in Blu-ray's favor when film studio Warner Bros., which had previously been supporting both formats, finally picked a side in January and began throwing its full, exclusive support behind Blu-ray. The defections came so fast after that –

American electronics chain Best Buy, Internet-based DVD rental house Net- flix – that retail juggernaut Wal- Mart's February announcement that it would stock Blu-ray hardware and software exclusively was tantamount to Tasering a horse that had already been put down.

And as for about more than one- million consumers who've already purchased HD-DVD players … well, you can sell just about anything on eBay these days.
