Language barriers

It is an unceasing astonishment that, despite current technology allowing ample space for multiple language tracks and subtitles, some of Japan's biggest DVD renters and retailers seem to go out of their way to make sure that Japanese movies (and – even more annoyingly, most other non-English language films) carry only one language track and one set of subtitles: Japanese.

While a bounty of cinema awaits film fans in every Tsutaya and HMV, DVDs with foreigner-friendly language tracks and sub- titles are a bit further out of reach. Want to understand all of Sadao Abe's comedic riffs in the very funny Maiko Haaaan!, even if your Japanese abilities are poor? Don't rent the DVD from any of the chain stores.

Once again, the Internet steps in where traditional retailers drop the baton, with online shops like Yes Asia and the venerable Amazon.com offering film lovers access to local movies with – happy day! – English language tracks and subtitles. (And, due to the nation's ridiculously high prices for local DVDs, the online retailers really don't set one back that much in comparison: SMAP star Takuya Kimura's somber blind-samurai drama Love and Honor, for example, runs a reasonably keen ¥4,500 at Yes Asia.)
