Kijuro Yahagi: Magnetic Vision 60/100 New Works

Thru Dec 19

DDD Gallery

Kijuro Yahagi has been delving into the world of perception since his “Shot by a Sight” exhibition back in 1988, where he attempted to unravel the mysterious makeup of the visual world from various angles. “Magnetic Vision” features a hundred new works by the artist and is based on a perspective that Yahagi developed himself: that when looking through a magnifying glass you actually see the lens compressing a much larger world. The resulting effect is an image in which the surrounding world appears to be magnetically drawn inward. Yahagi poses the question, “How can one reconcile the fact that the images in the frames are seamlessly connected with the surroundings?”

Myth: Imagination of Japanese Art

Thru Dec 24

Nara Kenritsu Bijutsukan

2010 sees Nara (or Heijo-kyo as it was known back then) commemorate its 1,300th anniversary as the old capital of Japan. This exhibition is part of the festivities, its aim to examine the history, development and transformation of Japanese art. It focuses on a number of artists that were influenced by the renaissance of the Western world, and the change that took place in Japanese art during the Meiji and Taisho eras as Japan. The presence of romanticism is more than evident in the several works on display, and the mixture of Japanese and European styles used to depict Japanese religious mythical characters and legends is quite astounding.
