Art Campus 2010: How to Look at Japanese Art — Kyoto Edition

Until Sep 26

Hosomi Museum, Kyoto

The Hosomi Museum in Kyoto was one of the first museums in the city to initiate the Campus Membership Program, where students and faculty of selected local universities can visit the museum free of charge. An extension of this program, Art Campus 2010, is set up as a summer school, where visitors can participate in events such as gallery talks and enjoy the highlights of the collection in a more relaxed way. The theme this year is ‘Miyako’, the former name of Kyoto, and exhibited works date mainly from the Edo period. On September 11th, there will be a panel discussion open to the public between the directors of the Hosomi Museum and the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art. The Hosomi Museum is founded on the collection of the Hosomi family and features over 1,000 pieces of art from all major periods of Japanese history.

• Open 10am-6pm, Closed Mon • Admission: ¥1,000 • Subway Higashiyama stn • Tel: 075-752-5555 • www.emuseum.or.jp/eng/index.html

Ross Wirtanen

Sep 28-Oct 2

SoHo Art Gallery, Osaka

This is American artist Ross Wirtanen’s third solo exhibition at SoHo Art Gallery, the last being in 2007. While his previous show featured semi-abstract works in light pastel tones, this latest installment explores portraiture in oil. These works are executed with free, dynamic brushstrokes layered over gesture sketches. Splashed with bold colours, his works leave nothing of the painting process hidden. This feeling of rawness is emphasized by his choice of everyday materials. His self-portrait, for example, is painted on cardboard. His faces at times remind you of Francis Bacon’s smeared portraits, yet there is enough there for you to make out what you’re seeing. Since 2007 SoHo Gallery has been showing emerging artists from the Kansai area as well as those from abroad.

• Open: 12pm-5pm, closed Mon • Admission: free • Subway Tanimachi 9-chome stn • Tel: 06-4394-7456 • http://sohoartgallery.blogspot.co

GBouke de Vries Super Window Project

Sep 11-24

Super Window Project, Kyoto

In the world of antiques, a crack here or a chip there can destroy the value of a work. Dutch Bouke de Vries, however, with his background in ceramic conservation, challenges this assumption. De Vries’ work traditionally features fractured pieces of art that are re-presented in a different context, thereby gaining new value. This show at Super Window Project will be a site-specific project, and incidentally, the last show at the gallery’s current location in northern Kyoto before relocating in 2011. In a city full of antiques, it will be fascinating to see what De Vries comes up with.
