Resident Evil: Afterlife
Because as everyone knows, the only thing better than zombie-fighting, is zombie-fighting in 3D. Director Paul WS Anderson returns for another entry into super-powered head-buster Alice (Milla Jovovich)’s campaign against the undead. Picking up where Resident Evil: Extinction left off, part four of the series (who says movie franchises based off of video games can’t be successful?) sees Alice assisting the obligatory plucky team of survivors, gathering the rather creepy clones of herself discovered in the last movie and finally — finally!— confronting Wesker (Shawn Roberts), the evil corporate boss behind it all.

FEATURED DVD REVIEW
Nine
Troubled Italian auteur Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) opines on the death and rebirth of the ‘dream’ of a film in the opening scenes
of the old-fashioned musical Nine, the film version of the hit Broadway 8 ½ remake of the same name. Stuffed with pedigree (Sophia Loren! Judi Dench!), glorious Italian coastlines and strangely unaffecting songs, Nine is a reminder of just how hard it is to make an entertaining film about filmmaking (something that hasn’t been done since, well, probably 8 ½), and how ‘old fashioned’ doesn’t always equal ‘good’.
Burdened with a miserable case of writers’ block, Guido has no idea what to do for his next film. Keeping the Italian press — and his filmmaking staff — at bay has taken its toll, and Guido is left to turn to the various women in life to help sort things out. Does his mistress (Penelope Cruz) have the answers? His dead mother (Loren)? His wife (Marion Cotillard)? Guido mopes.
The viewers discover just how unexciting angst and navel-gazing can be, even when it zips around in a groovy Alfa Romeo. Director Rob Marshall (Chicago) is no stranger to cinematic adaptations of musicals, which is why it’s strange to behold just how cold and impersonal Nine is. Managing the neat trick of making some of the most talented actresses working seem lifeless, Marshall strands Cruz and company onscreen with very little to do, and — as there are lot of women to shuffle through the story — very little time to do it. The film momentarily pops
to life with ‘Cinema Italiano’, a dazzling Kate Hudson number, but soon retreats back into misery, along with Guido. As the man said, sometimes the dream comes back to life, and sometimes ...
