Paul Klee: Art in the Making 1883-1940

Mar 12-May 15

The National Museum of Modern ART, KYOTO

There are certain painters Japan seems particularly endeared to — Monet, Chagall, and Modigliani to name a few. The Swiss painter Paul Klee (1879-1940) is another. Famous for his whimsical semi-abstract works, his paintings recall picture book illustrations with their bright colours and playful, rhythmical lines. This is the first exhibition in Japan, however, to focus on Klee’s creative process. Consisting of about 170 pieces mainly from the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, the exhibition is divided into six detailed ‘chapters’ based on various techniques and media Klee employed. Guaranteed to satisfy the most fervent of Klee fans, the show examines Klee’s paintings and prints based on sketches, how he combined cut paintings, and his experimentation in painting of both sides of the canvas. The exhibition will travel to the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo from May 31st.

• Open 9:30am-5pm, (until 8:30pm on Fri), closed Mon (Tue if Mon is a holiday. Open May 2nd) • Entry: ¥1,500 for adult • 10 min walk from Higashiyama stn on subway Tozai line • Tel: 075-761-4111 • www.momak.go.jp/English/

Rina Okumura — tracing

Mar 7–19

Port Gallery T, Osaka

The March installment of Port Gallery T’s Student Project features Rina Okumura, a fourth year student at the Kyoto City University of Arts. A conceptual art and media art major, Okumura’s work explores methods of communication or dis-communication. At times strikingly personal, the installations reflect a trait increasing common in young Japanese artists — a workman-like labour, intricate details, an exploration of the self and an urge to connect to others. As Okumura writes of the exhibition: “Signs are sent to space but reach no one. Signs are written but are understood by no one on earth. There is something wonderful about this process that never ends.”

• Open: noon-7pm (6pm on Sat), closed on Sun and national holidays • Free admission • 5 min walk from Higobashi sta (Yotsubashi line), exit 7 • Tel: 06-6185-3412 • www.portgalleryt.com

New Acquisitions

Until Mar 21

Otani Memorial Art Museum Nishinomiya

The Otani Memorial Art Museum is exhibiting recent acquisitions, mainly works by 20th century abstract painters from the Hanshin region. Most notably is the work of Zero Group and Gutai Art Association member Kazuo Shiraga who passed away in 2008. His work has been described as “action painting”, and throughout his career he employed eccentric techniques, at times cele- brated and at times labeled as gimmickry. For example, in 1957, dressed in a red Pinocchio suit, Shiraga famously kicked oil paint onto a paper on the floor while suspended from the ceiling. The works here are from later in his career but they show the same Pollock-like dynamism. Other featured artists include Waichi Tsutaka, Kiseki Kosaka, and Kosen Kato.

• Open 10am-5pm, closed Wed • Admission: ¥300 for adults • Hanshin Koroen stn • Tel: 079-833-0164 • www9.ocn.ne.jp/~otanimus
