What little girl hasn’t dreamed of being a princess? They’ve got it all: fancy floaty dresses, tiny waists, perfect hair and dreamy princes arriving just in the nick of time to save them from certain death/a life of misery — well, until Dreamworks threw a big green spanner in the works in the shape of Shrek’s sassy Fiona. She killed birds with her singing, belched like a viking and was proud of her womanly curves. Post-Shrek, animated princesses have had to wake up and smell the coffee.
Last year, Disney gave a new twist to the Brothers Grimm tale The Frog Prince, to mixed box office success. This year, with their 50th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, they are hoping it’s Rapunzel’s time to shine.
Our heroine Rapunzel, unknowingly a princess, has magical hair that grows when she sings. As a baby, she was kidnapped and shut up in a tower for 18 years. While life is pretty cozy in the tower with mother Gothel and pet chameleon Pascal, she’s getting cabin fever, so when a thief tumbles into her tower, he proves the driving force behind an escape plan. The thief Flynn may be street-wise but not so bright in other matters, and as he shares danger and discovery with Rapunzel, he’s as much a lead character as our princess.
Adventure, self-discovery and romance blended with comedy and some stunning CGI promise to make this one of the best Disney animations in decades. If you enjoyed the likes of Aladdin and Enchanted, chances are you’ll be swept away by the magic and adventure of this one too. But remember, this is a post-Shrek princess world. So expect some Rapunzel ass-kicking scenes, some comic visual moments from supporting animals Pascal and Maximus, some uplifting music at the key moments and just enough romance to make that inner princess sigh happily ever after.

True Grit
Mar 18
Saddle up the horses, pard’ner, the classic Hollywood western is back, with the wildly inspiring Coen brothers at the reins. But unlike the John Wayne-dominated True Grit of 1969, this version draws more inspiration from the original Charles Portis novel, by placing an unlikely heroine — fourteen-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross— back in her rightful place in the central role.
Mattie hits the dirt tracks of justice after her dad is killed by a mysterious hired hand. She enlists the help of reckless, trigger happy US Marshal Reuben J “Rooster” Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and LaBoef, a Texas ranger (Matt Damon) who is after the killer for his own reasons. As the trio face danger, surprises and the wildest of the wild west on the killer’s trail, their own ‘true grit’ is put to the test.
It takes a lot of grit for a relatively new teenage actress to saddle up next to the likes of Jeff Bridges and hold her own — and the actress was hired after some rare open auditions — but as the academy award nominations prove, Hailee Steinfield is clearly a star on the rise. She makes Mattie a tough but believable teen, at times bearing the weight of the wild, wild world on her small squared shoulders.
John Wayne fans, rather than bemoan a remake, are praising Bridges for making the role of Rooster Cogburn his own. The role won John Wayne Best Actor award at the Oscars — and Bridges has been nominated for the same. Fans of the western are thanking the Coens for presenting a grittier, more authentic feeling adaptation
of the story while keeping some of the previous movie’s humour. If you’ve never seen a western on the big screen, this might be the best reason in decades to give the genre a go. A perfect addition to the Coens’ fine stable of moviemaking.
